Have a Healthy and Happy Fall-Part 1

Cool crisp mornings, deep shades of red and orange, and that renewed sense of tranquility you feel looking out your window on a fall day- these are just a few of the things I enjoy about this time of year. Add in family gatherings, sporting events, and who can mention fall without pumpkin, spice, and all things nice.

Many of my clients tell me that this time of year is one of the hardest for weight loss or maintenance. Truth be told, there are so many more opportunities to indulge in rich foods, make excuses to miss workouts, and often we simply want to just relax without worrying about health and fitness. And, as much as I believe in a good physical and mental break, I challenge you to maintain your current wellness goals throughout this time. Sometimes the hardest part of meeting your health goals is staying the course, even when barriers get in the way.

So, here are a few tips to incorporate wellness into your fun fall activities.

Tailgating- Before the party, go out for a walk to think about the people you are going to see, what you want to catch up on with them, or how you will be aiding not only in your health goals, but maybe helping some of your friends too by bringing a veggie tray instead of the chips and dip. 

Visiting with Friends and Family- Make getting together with friends and family active. Instead of watching a movie or going to dinner, plan an “adventure” where you can enjoy the beautiful weather and season’s colors. Take a hike, run a charity race, play football in the yard, or load up to pick apples or pumpkins together.

Giving Back- A great way to feel better about yourself is by giving to others who are in need. Celebrate this season of thankfullness by volunteering at a soup kitchen, senior citizen center, or local church. Focus your time and events on helping others, visiting with distant friends and family, and bettering who you are as a person and who you can be.

These tips can help prevent overeating, being sedentary, and losing what we have worked so hard in achieving over the past several months.

When you do plan your meals, go out for a special occasion, or are wanting to crack out the Betty Crocker cookbook, remember that moderation is key. If you love hot chocolate on a cold night curled up with a good book or movie, by all means- enjoy this treat! Simple preparation substitutions like using a sugar-free hot cocoa mix blended with low-fat milk can make this beverage more calorie conscious. And hey, you can throw in some extra marshmallows this way!
